Warsaw Old Town: a walking guide

Published 2026-06-104 min read

Warsaw's Old Town (Stare Miasto) is a UNESCO World Heritage site — meticulously rebuilt after WWII. Here's a short self-guided walk to see the best of it.

Start at Castle Square

Begin at Plac Zamkowy with Sigismund's Column and the Royal Castle. Step inside the castle, or just admire the façade.

The Market Square

Wander to the colourful Old Town Market Square, find the Mermaid statue (Warsaw's symbol) and the Barbican fortifications.

Views & quiet corners

Climb St. Anne's Church tower for a rooftop view, then explore the lanes toward New Town and the riverside.

Do the walk light

It's all cobblestones and steps. Leave your luggage at Nowy Świat 22, a short walk away, and enjoy the Old Town hands-free until 3 a.m.
